today's the 10th of Muharram. now that's a direct introduction. i intended to fast today but i woke up past the sahur time and had already eaten koko krunch. anyhow, the day is also called Ashura, simply derived from the word 'ten' in Arabic. it is said that many things happened today, these include the escape of Moses and the Children of Israel from the Pharaoh across the Red Sea, Jesus was brought up to heaven when the Roman army was chasing him and attempted to crucify him, Job's illness was cured, Adam and Eve descended onto Earth, and among others lah, etc etc. Shi'a Muslims observe this day by mourning the martyrdom of Husayn, Prophet Muhammad's grandson, in Karbala, Iraq.
locally the celebrations consist of making a special type of porridge fondly known as bubur Ashura. i'm never sure of what's in it, and i'm not quite sure about the taste either. the origin of the porridge traces itself back to the time of Noah's great flood. after a very long period stuck in the Ark, rain finally stopped, the massive flood receded and earth finally resurfaced. all the passengers in the ark disembarked on a mountain, and Noah's wife was so happy to finally setting her foot on land, she made a porridge out of every grains, herbs and spices available in the ark, serving everyone with glee.
and that's it until today people still make the bubur, and this is some from last year's bubur-making at the sekolah.
