I've proven myself to be outdated when I actually felt agitated to write this so-called review, but for a movie deliberately watched that turned out to be casually-crafted yet beautiful in many sense, The Holiday deserves at least a miniature encore from my inner self.Straight-forwardly, it opens with a good soundtrack, and while I was wondering who's composing it the name Hans Zimmer appeared on the screen, which totally shut up all the stupid questions in mind for this guy produce gleaming, brilliant movie soundtracks. For me, the movie gave the 'A' vibe throughout the story - you'll feel sad in a good way, reflective - also in a good way, touched, tickled, and maybe aroused in a good way too. Two love affairs, one between Graham (Jude Law) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), while another deals between Iris (Kate Winslet) and Miles (Jack Black) were narrated perfectly and went along together smoothly, intertwined in a captivating manner.
It reminded me of the good holiday season though - always the best time of the year for retreating and reflecting - one of the main questions of the movie. Basically what the characters were actually doing is finding the right answer to a mainstream question - what the hell is true love? though in the movie, question of where is true love also applies.
Jack Black gave a rather surprisingly stunning performance, to the fact that we always watch him in characters that are usually not so serious (say, Nacho Libre). Though the line 'I feel like a rockstar' do sparks some memories of him in the School of Rock. And, damn lah, Cameron Diaz's driving Mini Cooper in the movie! tsk tsk. Now which one is attractive? Surely, well, Mini Cooper lah kan? argh!
Either way, the movie's terrific. It'll remind you that, basically there are many ways to appreciate life and manage love, plus there are always hope even you're pathetically heartbroken. Albeit being shown rather off-season here in Malaysia, the movie is still great to be enjoyed, and bottom-line is, The Holiday is lovely.
(I don't think it's a heavy chick-lit either)
